Standing Strong Against El Niño: St John Ambulance Kenya’s Emergency Preparedness
El Niño weather conditions can bring severe and unpredictable weather, including flooding, landslides, disease outbreaks and displacement of communities. At St John Ambulance Kenya (SJAK), preparedness is at the center of our approach to emergency response. Through our Emergency Operations Plan, we prepare our teams, resources and systems to respond effectively to emergencies before, during and after an El Niño event.
Ready to respond Our emergency response teams, ambulances, medical personnel and volunteers are mobilized to support the communities that might be affected. Clear response procedures will help ensure that resources are deployed where they are needed and that emergency operations remain coordinated throughout the crisis.
Coordinated emergency response SJAK applies an Incident Command System to establish defined roles, responsibilities and communication channels during major emergencies. This enables our teams to coordinate operations effectively, work with relevant authorities and partners, and make timely decisions as situations develop.
Identifying risks before they become emergencies Preparedness begins with understanding where risks are greatest. SJAK undertakes risk assessments to identify areas that may be particularly vulnerable to flooding, landslides, disease outbreaks and displacement. These assessments help guide the positioning of resources and prioritization of response efforts, with particular attention given to vulnerable populations and communities that may require additional assistance during an emergency.
Keeping our teams equipped SJAK’s preparedness measures include ensuring the availability of essential medical supplies, personal protective equipment, fuel reserves and communication systems. Maintaining operational readiness helps our teams respond safely and effectively while reducing disruptions to emergency medical services.
Supporting communities through emergencies During El Niño-related emergencies, SJAK support a range of response activities, including emergency medical care, evacuation support, disease outbreak response, first aid and humanitarian assistance.
Prepared before the emergency El Niño preparedness is not only about responding when disaster strikes. It is about anticipating risks, strengthening systems and ensuring that people and resources are ready beforehand. Through planning, training, coordination and community engagement, St John Ambulance Kenya continues to strengthen its capacity to respond to emergencies and protect lives across the country. Our commitment is to remain ready, professional and accountable in times of crisis, while upholding the humanitarian principles that guide our work. When emergencies come, preparedness saves lives. **St John Ambulance Kenya — Saving Lives. Serving Humanity. **
